Lemma. Finally, a Free Twitter Replacement App for the BlackBerry PlayBook (Review)

It has long been a complaint (one of the many complaints I should say) of PlayBook owners that there has been no native Twitter app. No Twitter app at all in fact. Enter Lemma. A strangely named app that, none-the-less functions very well as a full twitter replacement app. The lack of Playbook apps is appalling, and after being out for 10 months; any tablet should have far more apps than the Playbook does. It is hard to find almost any of the more popular apps on Android or iOS devices.

Thankfully, finally, a developer has taken advantage of the lack of a Twitter app to create their own twitter replacement app. And they have done a great job of it! After you complete the initial sign-in process, you are greeted by the news feed (Wait, is that the Facebook term? Well, news feed, timeline, tweet menu, whatever you call it), it’s simple, but it shows everything you need and would expect it to show.

You will notice that there is a diamond-like button at the side of each tweet. Tap on that and a pop-up menu appears with the self-explanatory options to: Reply, Retweet, Retweet with message, send direct message, favorite tweet, or cancel. I found it annoying that the afore-mentioned menu took up the whole screen instead of just a part of it, but that’s not really a big issue. One thing you should notice right away about this app is the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. At first I thought this looked ungainly and took up too much screen real-estate. But, after you get used to it, it’s really not that bad.

The buttons on the taskbar are: Back, Forward, Home, Tweet lists Settings, Send Direct Message, and, of course Tweet. The app is fast and responsive, in all a pleasure to use. One of the best things about this app though, is the fact that it’s open source, so anyone can edit the code and make the application even better. However, in closing, he one real bone I have to pick with this otherwise excellent app is that it can’t (yet) be used in Portrait mode; you are forced into always using the application in landscape mode.

Overall Impressions

8/10

Lemma is an excellent Twitter replacement app available for free download from the BlackBerry PlayBook App World. If you don’t feel like shelling out $5 for TweetBook, or just want a Twitter app, Lemma is definitely for you. It’s easy to use and fast, delivering all the features you get in the official Twitter app. The only problems are that the UI could definitely be more appealing, and you can’t use the app in Portrait mode. However, I definitely recommend this to all PlayBook owners and Twitter users!

As usual, here are some other reviews from other websites so that you can get a taste of other reviewers points of view. For this one in particular, there are hardly any reviews on the web so these 2 are all I could find.

  1. I was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of
content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or
2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
